How to Clean Your Singer Featherweight 221 Sewing Machine

Posted by Braden | Posted in , , , , | Posted on 11:03 AM

You should clean your Singer Featherweight 221 at least once a year and sometimes even after a prolonged period (several weeks) of continuous seam.

Like any machine that needs to be cleaned and lubricated, is a good idea to work on a layer of newspapers, in order to minimize any further confusion. Other items you need is a screwdriver, WD-40 lubricant oil, baby oil, sewing machine, cotton lint, Q-tips or toothpicks, an old toothbrush head small, and possibly 0000 fine steel wool and kerosene. Do not use alcohol (or Lestoil) to clear his penalty that will dissolve the decals and finishing machines.

Start by scraping off any visible grease with a soft cotton cloth. If you have not cleaned your Featherweight at some point, or you just bought one and this is your first cleaning when it may be necessary to dissolve any hardened grease. To do this pour a little bit of oil (or WD-40) for the solidification of fat and let it soften. Very stubborn, hardened grease may need to be soaked overnight in which case you should tip your Featherweight so that the solid material sits in a cloth soaked with kerosene (of course this must be done in a well ventilated area away from flames) . Once all the old grease is removed, reapply oil sewing machine which was not approved. See your owner's manual for the locations of lubrication.

If you notice pieces of fat or dirt accumulating around the Singer Featherweight decal, or registration, they can be easily removed with a Q-Tip or toothpick covered with a small portion of its soft cotton. Stubborn bits can be removed by first soaking the end of the Q-Tip with WD-40 or kerosene.

Remove the needle plate (plate throat) and to remove any thread that can be wrapped around the axle. Also clean any lint accumulated inside the cover and in discussions with the spindle of a toothbrush.

If you are mechanically inclined, it is not a bad idea to give his Featherweight 221 a very thorough internal cleansing as well. This means having to remove virtually all the mechanical components that can be unscrewed including the face plate, presser foot, cover the coil and the wheel, but not the engine. It is always a good idea to keep the components together (and labeled if necessary) so that you know how to put it back together again. All components must be carefully sprayed / soaked in WD-40 and clean. WD-40 will really clean, lubricate and help protect the metal components.

Remember, although you can clean the motor housing, not lubricate the engine. Electric motors require very little lubricant, and is very easy to damage the engine by over lubrication.

After cleaning the engine, take a moment to check the belt tension. There should be only ? to ? inch of play in the belt. Moreover, if the belt is worn, replace it. This is done by loosening the screw directly under the belt on the machine base, almost straight behind the light switch. Loosen the screw just enough so that the blades of the engine (do not remove the screw) and the belt can be removed. Place the new belt, put the engine into position and tighten the screw. Make sure you have the proper belt tension. If the belt is too tight will stretch the engine. If the belt is too loose, you will lose power. For the best performance of your machine, take your time and make sure that the proper belt tension.

If you notice some light surface rust (not deeply pitted) on the metal parts of your machine, this can also be easily removed. Rub the rusty 0000 part gently with fine steel wool. Toughest stains can be helped out by first spraying of steel wool with WD-40 or scrubbing with kerosene. Do not use steel wool to remove all dirt, grease or debris from the surface of the machine, since it will leave scratch marks on the lacquer finish.

Once you've finished cleaning your Singer Featherweight 221, make sure all the screws were tightened. Any loose bolts can cause grinding or noise and, in extreme cases may eventually damage your machine if it causes a traffic jam.

Finally, place a small dab of baby oil on a cotton fabric soft, lint-free cloth and rub it all over the outside of the body of the machine. Wipe any excess. Not only will this give the unit a beautiful shine, but the oil will help preserve the finish of varnish.

Regular cleaning of your sewing machine Singer Featherweight 221 will keep it running smoothly for years.

3 Reasons to Purchase a Singer Featherweight 221 Sewing Machine

Almost 80 years ago, in 1933, Isaac Singer introduced the first machine model 221 Featherweight Sewing World's Fair in Chicago. Today, almost 50 years after the last pen was produced in 1960 in modern sewing machine with computer-controlled sewing, the pen is still a highly sought after sewing machine. In fact, some 221 model Featherweights are still in the hands of their original owners. Here are three reasons why you should find and buy one.

1. Simplicity. The Model 221 was designed to do one thing and do it well, and that was to sew a straight seam. The mechanism of sewing combines original rotary hook and four motion feed, both originally patented in 1850 by Allen Wilson. Similar to not being able to build a better mousetrap, these two mechanisms are still found on modern sewing machines today, but without all the electronics. The unique mechanism is a simple interaction of finely machined parts that operate with the consistency of a fine Swiss watch. Barring injury mechanism, the parts will only wear over time, but regular maintenance (lubrication, cleaning) will keep the engine running as the day it was originally purchased.

2. Durability. In 1933, Singer Featherweight designed the 221 to be the sewing machine just a housewife needed to buy. The mechanism of plain sewing was complemented by a tough, all metal frames and a small but powerful motor. The metal (aluminum) frame substantially reduced the vibration of the machine during operation, allowing the mechanism for sewing work very well. This allowed 221 points in any tissue without putting excessive strain on the engine. When first introduced, the Model 221 was described as being able to do the work of an industrial sewing machine. Thus, limiting the strain on the engine with a rigid structure, the singer was able to prolong the life of the machine. Again, proper maintenance is essential to further limiting the friction of moving parts, which is another component of the durability of the pen, is so easy to maintain.

3. Weight. It is called the plume for a reason. The singer noticed that the sewing machines taking up space, especially when they are too heavy to move and are usually accompanied by a table sewing. Weighing ~ 11 ? pounds (thanks to its aluminum structure, design and simplified), the plume was the first sewing machine truly portable. When placed on the case, the Featherweight 221 could be easily stored out of sight in a closet. Today, the still is beneficial to the sewers and quilters traveling to classes and demonstrations on the need to bring your own machine. Of course you can roll your Bernina fully electronic in a wheelbarrow, or simply load your Featherweight without so much as breaking a sweat.

About 2.5 million were produced 221 featherweights 1933-1960, and due to its simplicity, durability and light weight yet highly sought after and well respected, a sewing machine.

Is it Singer Sewing Machines Or Singer Military Weapons?

When you think of the Singer brand, you probably think of sewing machines. But you knew that there was a time when the singer stopped making those and started making military weapons? And they were apparently very good at it, in at least some of its aspects.

Many years ago, in late 1930, during World War II, the singer was hired by the United States government to help them make military weapons such as guns and aerial bomb sights for aircraft. It seems that they were not the best at making guns, but they did very well with a few other things.

Where Singer could not Screw the needle

In 1939, the United States government gave Singer a trial contract to make hundreds of 45-caliber automatic pistols. The government was not very pleased with what he saw and ended up giving the contract to other companies that are now very popular among the manufacturers of weapons. The particular gun, the M1911A1 was widely used in various wars, but began to become less popular in the 70s. Today it is used both by the military as many police officers and FBI agents. If you are a collector of weapons and have one of the few that these weapons were made by Singer you can make a good profit on it. They were known to be sold for more than $ 50,000.

They also made an attempt to manufacture semi-automatic M1 Garand rifle. The government once again not get too excited about the product. Other companies known as Springfield Armory and Winchester has played a leading role in manufacturing during World War II.

As a singer made a Stitch in Time

Where they really accomplished was to help the U.S. government with the Second World War was the development of the Norden sight. It was also used in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. It was a tool that the crews of bombers used to define precisely their sights on targets. Singer did not invent the device, but it was one of several companies working on it during the war. Even though this device was never very accurate, was considered a great help in World War II.

So now you have something to think about next time you're sitting with his Singer sewing machine. Today they are involved in other businesses, but they are no longer making military weapons. At least not for the moment.
