Singer 201 - "The Greatest Sewing Machine Ever Made"

During the" glory "," day of Singer Sewing Machines, Singer produced the model 201 in 1930 to at least the 1950s. It was his finest (and higher prices) machine of thousands. These machines were produced - and most of them are still sewing as finely and strongly today as they did when first produced.

Research the Singer 201 and you will find more than an indication that the 201 is the Singer sewing machine best ever made. While I can not say with authority the same (I have not tried all the machines Singer ever made!), I found nothing on the 201 that make me disagree with that statement.

I really appreciate fine mechanical and electronic. I like old clocks and Hammond organs, tube amplifiers and vintage guitars, vintage sports cars, appliances and gadgets like that. About 10 years ago (in a fit of midlife crisis-) I bought a Porsche 944. When I sit in the Singer 201 and press the pedal, I have a feeling very similar to that experienced when cruising down the highway in the Porsche at a way-too-fast speed - feeling smooth and comfortable machines running smoothly.

I compare it to a Porsche - and I've seen others compare it to driving a Ferrari! It's really quality of American iron back to the days when something really means!

The singer has produced at least four different versions of 201:

201-1 - Treadle version

201-2 - motor vessels and gear-driven

201-3 - External engine and belt-driven

201-4 - crank (original factory, the latest conversion)

The 201 is a robust and heavy machine - not a laptop at all! This is an elegant and sexy sports car - is a full-sized, sedan Desk elegant and luxurious grand! It is built to last - but do not need maintenance to perform your best. You will need the oil regularly and also grease the wheels from time to time. You can unscrew the circular silver plate on the back of the machine to reveal the gears and lubrication points. Use regular Singer Sewing Machine gear grease (not oil!). Use oil sewing machine only at the points of lubrication recommended. This machine uses a rotary hook class 66 coil (means very little vibration, the quality of the big point, and rolls easily found.)

The machine is easy to thread and easy to use. The fact that some of these machines are being 80 years old and still outsewing modern machines is a point of saying - which is likely to last at least another 80 years! Keep them well and they will keep sewing - well, more than you or I probably will!

One reason the machine is so easy to use is that it is a sewing machine straight only. A single point ... but a beautiful spot and perfect straight! You will not find themselves "fighting" the 201 how can you fight with machines plastic low end - fighting less time means less time fixing and re-issues and less frustration!

Even if the machine is straight from one point, Singer and other vendors made a series of accessories that offer a world of possibilities - free-form embroidery, buttonholes, zig-zag, blindhemming - practically anything you want from a machine Sewing quality is easily achievable.

Best of all, prices tend to be very low (supply and demand - Singer made zillions of these machines!). You often pay less as you would to download a plastic that can die a deserved death after a few weeks or months of sporadic sewing - and you'll make a slave of fashion throughout life.

As you read the singer 201? Well, think back in the Porsche / Ferrari analogy - except for the lowest price for less than $ 100! This machine purrs like a well crafted piece of machinery that is. It feels "quality: If you know what I mean. This machine will definitely be on your" keeper "list.
